Background of the study
Online political campaigns have transformed the way public opinion is formed during local elections. In Port Harcourt, political candidates increasingly utilize online platforms to disseminate information, engage with voters, and shape public discourse (Ibrahim, 2023). This study investigates how online political campaigns influence public opinion formation by analyzing digital content, interactive engagement, and viral messaging strategies. The research examines the role of social media, campaign websites, and online forums in creating narratives that resonate with local communities (Uche, 2024). By leveraging real-time data and feedback, online campaigns can adjust their strategies to address voter concerns and counteract misinformation. This dynamic approach contrasts with traditional campaign methods, offering a more immediate and measurable impact on public opinion. The study further explores the potential of these digital strategies to not only inform but also mobilize voters, thereby influencing the overall election outcome. Through an in-depth analysis of campaign case studies, the research aims to identify key factors that contribute to effective online political campaigning and its broader implications for democratic engagement (Okoro, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Local elections in Port Harcourt have witnessed a surge in online political campaigning, yet the extent to which these campaigns shape public opinion remains underexplored. Despite the widespread use of digital tools, challenges such as misinformation, echo chambers, and limited digital literacy persist, potentially distorting public opinion (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of clear frameworks to measure the impact of online campaigns complicates the evaluation of their effectiveness. Consequently, political candidates may not fully realize the potential of digital engagement to shape voter perceptions positively. This study addresses these issues by critically assessing the influence of online political campaigns on public opinion formation and proposing strategies to enhance their effectiveness (Uche, 2024).
